These shall be of the diaphragm type or axial flow type or equivalent and either spring-loaded self actuated or pilot operated. The gas shall be vented safely through remote vents. The vent stacks shall be fitted with weather cap of the blow of type.

The valve instantly opens when the pressure in the pipeline exceeds the preset safe level, thus relieving excessive pressure from the pipeline. When the pressure returns to normal, the valve closes slowly, at an adjustable speed. The valves also can be used to sustain upstream pressure to a preset pressure value.
